Rest in the knowledge that there are so many oils suitable during pregnancy and only a handful that are not recommended. There is still no evidence to suggest that oils have ever caused a miscarriage.
The handful to avoid are; Basil, Cedarwood, Clary Sage, Cypress, Fennel, Jasmine, Juniper, Marjoram, Myrrh, Peppermint, Rose, Rosemary & Thyme.
Why? Because there properties are mainly to be emmenagogic (bring on premature labour)but they also stimulate the systems strongly, cause hallucinations, rid toxins/diuretic, sedative, alter temperature, alter hormones which confuse the ones that need to release at certain times and some simply irritate the skin which is often more sensitive during pregnancy.
Please do add Jasmine & Lavender to the good pile when you are in labour as they ease contractions along with Neroli & Rose!
The rule of thumb is to lessen dilution, generally half the dose sometimes less.
As Therapists we need to still be mindful of each clients needs and blend accordingly. We need to not just stick to cautious safe oils such as Mandarin. Remember that pregnancy isn’t an illness it’s an altered state of health lasting roughly 40 weeks (give or take!)
My advice is to enjoy the oils during pregnancy, they can support you through the emotional roller coaster of pregnancy, the massive changes in your body shape and will generally support how you feel and is a great way to stimulate your child’s sense of smell! Delivered in a massage by a trained Therapist with a personalised blend is a slice of nurturing heaven!
